Crest Nicholson’s Rowan Park development, located in the London Borough of Merton, has been named as the “2012 Project Winner” at this year’s Housing Design Awards.
The Mitcham site, which was developed by Crest Nicholson in partnership with Merton Council, the Homes and Communities Agency and architects Sheppard Robson, won the accolade after being commended for its family-friendly layout and community facilities.
The housing development was also praised for going beyond its sustainability brief and delivering a new style and identity for the area, acting as an exemplary model for other London suburbs.
The former school site on Rowan Road is in the process of being transformed in to a 2.6 hectare landscaped public park, featuring 217 much-need homes. Comprising a mix of 131 family homes and 86 apartments, the properties will meet high design quality specifications and feature solar panels on the roofs.
In addition, residents will be benefiting from a new scout and community facility, a medical centre and pharmacy, 278 car parking bays and 171 cycle spaces within a new ‘homezone’ street layout. Councillor Andrew Judge, Merton Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Sustainability and Regeneration, commented: "It is very gratifying that Rowan Park has been selected as a project winner at this year’s Housing Design Awards.
“From the outset, nine years ago, we aimed to achieve an exemplary eco-development featuring a high quality of design, strong eco-credentials and integration with new public green and open space. This scheme will provide more than 200 homes to local people, and particularly families, in Mitcham. “Rowan Park is at the forefront of innovative and sustainable design, and sets the benchmark for future developments in our borough.” Christine Tiernan, Sales & Marketing Director for Crest Nicholson South, said: “It’s fantastic that Rowan Park has been recognised as a development that goes above and beyond most housing developments.
“We’ve worked extremely hard with all our partners to make this development a stylish, modern and sustainable one that meets the needs of every homeowner. We’re honoured to be given this accolade and we’re even more excited to be involved in making this innovative development a reality.”
