Staple Grove kids learn how to build a house

Year two pupils from Staple Grove Church of England Primary School have visited Crest Nicholson’s new housing development on the outskirts of Taunton to learn about how houses are built and the importance of health and safety on a building site. The six and seven year olds enjoyed a tour of the Silk Meadows site, watched a forklift truck demonstration and witnessed how builders would put out a fire on the site.

The visit was arranged by Year 2 Class Teacher Mel Moore and attended by colleague Annette Law. Commenting on the visit, Annette said: “The children absolutely loved their visit to Silk Meadows and it was such a beneficial education experience that we will be arranging another one for later this school year. Some of our Year One and Two pupils will be doing a ‘House for Sale’ project this year and visiting a real-life building site offers the perfect way to bring their lessons to life.

“Because the site is only a stone’s throw from the school, the children had seen the landscape changing and so were really excited and interested to find out more. The Crest Nicholson team were fantastic, especially Tony the Site Manager who showed us round. They explained all about the different materials and equipment used to build houses and the children absolutely loved the forklift truck demonstration. Tony also highlighted how dangerous building sites can be, which is a really important lesson for young children and will encourage them not to think of building sites as playgrounds.”

Tony Daniels, Crest Nicholson Site Manager at Silk Meadows, added: “We’re always keen to forge strong links with the local communities in which we work and it was a real pleasure to give the children a bit of insight into how we build our homes. We look forward to showing even more of the children around later in the year.”
