Article image Newly-weds Glenn and Kirsty Hampson were delighted to find they could afford to buy, rather than rent, their first marital home thanks to award-winning housebuilder Crest Nicholson and the Government’s Help to Buy scheme.

After visiting Crest Nicholson in Taunton, the young couple were excited to learn that Help to Buy could remove the need for a hefty deposit and help them take that first important step onto the property ladder.  Help to Buy enables purchasers to own their own home with just a five per cent deposit and a 75 per cent mortgage. The remaining cost of the property is funded by a 20 per cent equity loan from the Government that is interest free for the first five years.

Glenn Hampson, said: “We hadn’t been expecting to buy yet and weren’t even really looking but a sign for Crest Nicholson’s Firepool Lock development caught our eyes as we were passing the train station one day.  We popped in to have a chat with the sales advisor and that conversation changed our lives.  She explained all about Help to Buy and how you only need a five per cent deposit and it was from then we realised buying could be a reality.”

While it was Firepool Lock that initially attracted the Hampson’s attention, it was Crest Nicholson’s Silk Meadows development on the other side of town that proved to be their dream location.

“I work as a teacher in Wellington and Kirsty is a café manager in town, so Silk Meadows on Silk Mills Lane is ideal for us,” continued Glenn.  “Kirsty is able to cycle to work and the commute for me is really easy, plus we’re just around the corner from friends and family.

“We also fell in love with the show home at Silk Meadows – it’s a two bedroom Sandown house with nice big bedrooms and a really homely feel. We could tell the difference in the quality of Crest homes compared to the other new builds we’d seen and couldn’t wait to put our own stamp on it.”

In addition to the quality and affordability of their new home, Glenn and Kirsty were impressed by the level of support Crest Nicholson offered them, especially as they were first-time buyers.

Glenn explained: “The customer service we received was just excellent.  As this was the first time we’d bought a property we were probably a bit naïve and certainly felt out of our depth but the sales staff were fantastic.  They held our hand throughout the entire process and gave us lots of information and options.  They put us in touch with South West Homes so that we could get independent advice about the Help to Buy scheme and didn’t pressurise us to make decisions quickly.  The team really bent over backwards to help us and since we’ve moved in they’ve been there for anything we need.  Nothing has been too much trouble.”

Silk Meadows’ location on the edge of the village of Staplegrove, a short drive from the breath-taking Quantock Hills and just one and a half miles from Somerset’s shopping capital, Taunton, means that the development offers an enviable mix of both town and country living.

Prices using the Help to Buy scheme at Silk Meadows currently start from £128,000 for a two bedroom Sandown house and £172,000 for a three bedroom Hickstead house.
