Will Richards and his partner Rachel Wilkinson, both 24 years old, purchased their first home together using the government’s Help to Buy scheme at Crest Nicholson’s Chantry Green in Harrietsham. The development’s location in the heart of the Kent countryside “ticked all of the boxes” for the couple, as it allows them to enjoy the peace of countryside living alongside great transport links to London.  


Will and Rachel are born and bred in Kent but commute into the city for work, with Rachel working as a civil servant and Will working as marketing account manager for some of the world’s leading alcohol brands. Whilst they love their jobs, they enjoy leaving the hustle and bustle of London behind at the weekends.


“Although we sometimes work from home, we wanted an easy location to commute into London from,” said Will. “We enjoy London life but love getting away from it too, so Chantry Green was perfect for us as it is surrounded by beautiful farmland, but close to well-equipped villages.


The village has all the amenities typical of an English village including country pubs and shops, yet the vibrant town of Maidstone is a short drive away with its independent shops. Harrietsham station provides direct trains to London Victoria, and the nearby Ashford station allows for quick travel to London St Pancras in just 38 minutes.


After living with their parents to save up for their first home, Will and Rachel were set on finding the right property for them – often viewing up to six homes in one day. “We hadn’t considered Harrietsham before as we weren’t as familiar with the village,” said Will. “But once we arrived at Chantry Green and saw the setting, we changed our minds and knew this was where we wanted to be.”


Thanks to the Help to Buy scheme, Will and Rachel were able to make a more significant step up the property ladder and bought a three-bedroom semi-detached ‘Hartley', instead of a two-bedroom property. “The sales advisors answered all of our queries and questions really well, which reassured us that Crest Nicholson was the right developer to be purchasing with,” said Will, “The sales advisor impressed even the more sceptical members of our family during the viewing, and my sister has already reserved a plot because of the great customer experience we received!”


The couple sometimes work from home so having a home office was also a key requirement. “Being home-based for most of the week, it was important for me to find a home that allowed me to have my own space to work in,” explained Will, “I love my office, it is perfect for what I do, and it gives me space to work separate from the rest of the house.”


Purchasing a new build property also gave the couple the opportunity to put their own stamp on their home. To make the most of 2018’s glorious summer, Will and Rachel decided to expand the patio and make the most of the garden as a space for entertaining. “The hot summer months gave us the perfect excuse to have my friends and family over. My parents even bought me a barbecue for my birthday and I’m a professional now,” commented Will. The large, open-plan living areas will allow Will and Rachel to continue entertaining friends and family in the winter months.
