Realisation among house hunters that commuting to London from Bath will become more feasible has seen an uptake of interest at the city’s premier new property development.

With work to lower the tracks at Box Tunnel to accommodate the overhead power lines now complete, this has also brought into sharp focus that Bath and the West Country will soon become much more accessible for those working in the capital.

The result has been an increase of house hunters considering the Georgian city as a possible place to put down their roots.

Susan Young, sales and marketing director at Crest Nicholson’s Bath Riverside is now expecting the level of enquiries from potential buyers in London and the Home Counties to steadily rise as completion of work on the rail line creeps ever closer.

Susan said: “The dawn of shorter train journeys will extend the commuter belt to places like Bath. In reality anyone thinking of moving to Bath, but who still works predominantly in London, will probably work from home for a couple of days while commuting the rest.

“However, for those wanting or needing to be in the capital every day, work on the rail line will make it much more feasible to travel daily.”

With Great Western Railway promising longer, more frequent trains, 20 per cent more seats, more tables and more legroom will make the journey much more comfortable as well.

And with Bath Riverside being within walking distance of the station and city centre means those living there will have little use for a car.

Susan added: “One notable benefit of Bath Riverside is the fact that it’s within walking distance of the railway station. It means potential commuters won’t have to drive into the city and find somewhere to park before they catch a train. Instead they can walk the ½ mile or so, along the car-free, pedestrian tow path and be on the platform within about 15 minutes.

“Many residents I have spoken to have said they are much less reliant on using private transport and are using their cars a lot less which has economic and environmental benefits.”

With some property experts also predicting a rise in both demand and prices of property once the electrification of the main line railway is complete, buying now before any increase in Bath property prices makes sense.

Susan agrees that property prices will rise, although not as sharply as some predict, and believes now is the time for prospective house hunters to consider Bath Riverside before the penny drops and more people grasp the fact that the famous city is well within comfortable commuting distance of the capital.

Susan said: “The electrification of the main Great Western line is going to bring cities like Bath a lot closer to London. This is going to make it very attractive for those happy to travel and places like Bath are well on the list for those looking to move.”
