Cardiff Architecture students get expert insight into housebuilding in Monmouth

Students from Cardiff Metropolitan University have visited Crest Nicholson’s Old School Rise new build housing development to find out more about modern housebuilding techniques and how architectural drawings become reality.

The students, who are undertaking their first year of studying Architectural Technology at the university, were given an exclusive behind the scenes tour of Old School Rise, and award-winning housebuilder Crest Nicholson provided insight into the build process, and how to ensure a building project is successful.

The visit was arranged by course leader Nick Evans, who said: “Advancements in technology mean that Architectural Technologists can often find themselves primarily office-based, inputting designs into a computer. As such, visits like this are invaluable for the students to gain on-the-ground experience, see how their designs would be brought to life and start to understand how their designs might look once building work begins.”

Throughout the students’ time at Old School Rise, they were able to observe a number of different activities that are integral to a building project, including excavations, foundations, damp proofing and super structure.

Nick continued: “The whole visit was very impressive. Building design is a very sophisticated process, and we’re very grateful to Crest Nicholson for helping the students get hands-on, and experience an active building site.”

Leading the tour of Old School Rise was John Rees, Senior Build Manager at Crest Nicholson. He commented: “We were thrilled to welcome the students from Cardiff Metropolitan University to the site. It’s essential to have a strong idea of how a development project comes together, especially if you are involved in the initial planning and design stages, and it was a real pleasure to provide the students with that experience” Located in Wyesham on the eastern outskirts of the market town of Monmouth, Old School Rise is a collection of 42 two, three and four bedroom homes. The development is within walking distance of the Wye Valley’s breathtaking scenery and Monmouth town centre’s thriving retail and leisure facilities, including two galleries and two theatres, creating an attractive mix of town and country living.
