Celebrating history at Arborfield Green

Numerous houses at Barkham Place

Did you know that Barkham Place at Arborfield Green development has a rich history?

Originally established in 1904 as a Remount Deport during World War I, it was mainly used as a Horse Infirmary, treating injured horses throughout the war. Thirty years later, Arborfield Green was transformed into the Army Technical School for boys and became known as Arborfield Garrison. The Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME) also called Arborfield Green home until 2016.

Today, the Garrison’s historic buildings are being regenerated to form part of this vibrant, new community. The Horse Infirmary Stables, a listed scheduled monument, will be at the heart of the community. It is being converted into a vibrant public place for residents, overlooking a new village green. The Moat House, once the Garrison HQ, will be transformed into new offices for the community and the moat will also form a key part of the new landscape. The newest phase of the development, Barkham Place includes a selection of homes with 2, 3, 4 and 5-bedrooms.

In celebration of Arborfield Green’s history, Amy Goodman, a well-known sculptor and portrait artist who grew up in Berkshire, is currently sculpting three life-size horses in tribute to Arborfield Green’s former military heritage, as well as celebrating the role of the domestic horse in today’s strong local equine community.

These will be set at the entrance of the development and welcome residents home and greet visitors as they arrive.
