Geography students enjoy field trip to Centenary Quay

This month, Local housebuilder Crest Nicholson hosted over 150 secondary school children at its Centenary Quay development in Southampton, Hampshire, offering them the opportunity to get hands-on with housebuilding, which they have been learning about in the classroom.

Geography students from Oasis Academy Sholing, in Southampton, have been learning all about Centenary Quay, its history and the redevelopment of the site. As part of their fieldwork, pupils benefitted from a guided tour of the community and the four bedroom “Filey” show home with the site and sales team. This gave them the chance to find out more on the success of Centenary Quay so far, how sales have been progressing and the range of amenities in the local area, including a gym, coffee shops and a John Lewis. It was also a good opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge of the housebuilding industry in general as well as health and safety regulations on a building site.

Eileen Guihen, Sales and Marketing Director and Deputy Managing Director at Crest Nicholson South, comments: “We’re really pleased that geography students from Oasis Academy Sholing are learning all about our flagship development in Southampton, Centenary Quay, and are discovering what a career in construction looks like!

“We are particularly keen to encourage students into the construction industry, as there are so many different skills to learn and enjoyable career paths to discover. We champion this with our apprenticeship schemes and inclusive employment policies, as we hope to demonstrate the many options open to talented young people.

At Crest Nicholson, we are not only committed to building homes but supporting and building relationships with the wider community. Our work with local schools is a big part of this and we look forward to working with Oasis Academy, and other schools in the area, in the future.”

Kirsty Robinson, Geography Teacher at Oasis Academy Sholing, adds: “I was delighted when Crest Nicholson accepted our proposal to survey the site, and then take our students on a guided tour, sharing an overview of the development and careers in the construction industry.

“Getting a look at various industries is crucial for our students, and I’ve already had a few students who took part now considering a career in the housebuilding and construction industry.”

Comprising 164 new homes, Centenary Quay recently launched its final phase of houses at the development, a selection of four bedroom townhouses. The thriving community is situated beside the River Itchen and incorporates open space with plenty of amenities on the doorstep including a library, gym, restaurants, coffee shop and beauty salon. Just across the river is Southampton city centre, where residents of Centenary Quay can make the most of the shops, bars and restaurants right on their doorstep, including at Watermark, West Quay and Ocean Village.

With Southampton Central train station less than three miles from the development, London is within easy reach via regular trains and a journey time of just an hour and fifteen minutes. The M27 and M3 motorways are close by, ideal for those looking to reach the New Forest, Portsmouth, London and beyond.
