Taking your first step onto the property ladder is a landmark moment for many people who have long saved for that all-important deposit. The expense of taking your first step, however, doesn’t always leave a lot of money to spend on interiors.

Crest Nicholson’s leading interiors expert Rebecca Edmunds, Founding Partner at Saskia Bøgh, has shared her top tips on how to focus on what’s important when decorating on a budget.

Rebecca said: “Most people are familiar with the Danish concept of ‘Hygge’, but first-time buyers may benefit from tapping into the lesser-known Swedish concept of ‘Lagom’, which is all about having or being ‘enough, sufficient, adequate, just right’”

“With these principles in mind, when you move into your first home focus your funds on key pieces that form a basis for wider design. Invest in the pieces that you’re going to use most frequently, be it your sofa, bed or wardrobe, so that they’re going to serve you well for a long time to come.

“While staying on top of trends is a great way to keep your home looking fresh, if you’re investing a larger amount of money in an item, make sure it’s something that’s not going to date too quickly – it’s got to be something you will still want to have in your home in five or ten years’ time. Smaller, cheaper accessories are a great way to capture ever-changing trends in your home.

“In terms of trends, grey has featured heavily in many of our homes over the last few years. However, 2019 may be the year that brighter colours make a comeback. This doesn’t necessarily mean adding walls of bright colour but incorporating colourful accessories that add a splash of drama.”

“We’ve seen sustainability become more and more of a priority for consumers throughout every industry, and interiors is no exception. This year, homebuyers will be on the lookout for more eco-friendly ways to decorate their home, whether it’s through recycled and natural materials or eco-friendly and ethically sourced products.”
