Top Tips on How to ‘Marie Kondo’ Your New Home

Moving into a new home is the perfect opportunity to ‘Marie Kondo’ your life. Hit new Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo has taken the UK by storm, with people across the country embracing her methods to transform their home into a permanently clear and clutter-free space.

With open plan living and light, airy interiors, new build properties offer purchasers a blank canvas to start afresh. Jon Pilling, Design Director at Abode Interiors, designed Crest Nicholson’s recently launched two-bedroom show home at Spectrum in Tunbridge Wells.

Jon shares his five top tips on how to ‘Marie Kondo’ your home:

  1. De-clutter before you move

Save time and money by de-cluttering your current home before moving. This saves time packing things you don’t really need and avoids any additional delivery costs

  2. Do these items ‘spark joy’?

Work out which belongings hold a strong emotional attachment for you; this might be photos or keepsakes from holidays which make you feel happy and positive. Old photos and interesting mementos are a great way of giving your home personality but if they aren’t special to you, don’t waste precious space by keeping hold of them

  3. Use modern design pieces as storage

Maximise space by opting for attractive yet practical storage solutions. Adding boxes within these units will make sure space is used efficiently

  4. Invest in multi-purpose pieces

Buy furniture which could have a dual purpose. For example, a dressing table that could also double up as a desk, saving on both space and money. As our lives are increasingly spent online, the need for huge collections of books or reams of paper is unnecessary so we recommend keeping this space as clear as possible

  5. Visit show homes for inspiration

Taking a peek around show homes is an ideal way to bring out your inner Marie Kondo. Take inspiration from these fresh, clean and clutter-free interiors!
