Crest Nicholson Development Highly Commended at Prestigious Housebuilder Awards

Recognised in the ‘Three Storeys or Fewer’ category for the Velvet house type, which is exclusive to Rosewood, the judging panel was looking for excellence in design, attractive exteriors, sustainability and usability.

Commending the Velvet and Rosewood as a whole for its ‘impressive contemporary design’, the judges further applauded the development for its conception and execution, which was deemed ‘just right’ for both the scheme and surrounding area.

Designed by award-winning architectural practice Broadway Malyan, the Velvet is a spacious four bedroom family home arranged over three storeys, extending to almost 1800 sq ft in size. With an exceptional architectural attention to detail and practical yet stylish layout, the Velvet not only enhances but also heightens the standard of properties in the local area.

Praising the Velvet for its ‘architectural flair’, the judges noted that the 8.6ft ceilings are higher than in the average home and ‘lend an air of expansiveness’, while the large windows reveal the skyline and flood the internal accommodation with natural light. With double doors opening onto the garden from the living room and kitchen, the outside figures as an extension of the internal living accommodation and effectively brings the outside in.

With further innovative features such as a first floor bay window that projects outwards providing a porch above the main entrance externally and space internally for a study or a playroom, the Velvet’s clever use of space is highlighted.

As a corner home, the Velvet’s internal space has been maximised to incorporate a 45 degree angle into its design, so that the generous kitchen / dining room extends off from the main structure to create an L-shape. Furthermore, being open-plan offers home owners the necessary flexibility to adapt the room layout depending on whether they are hosting a cosy family supper or an extravagant dinner party.

As a Forever Home, the spacious downstairs cloakroom also doubles up as a utility room, housing noisy white goods and household clutter. The expansive cloakroom also affords occupants the flexibility to adapt the space into a wet room for a later stage in life or a change in circumstances.

Equipped with two further dual aspect reception rooms, the family room is perfect for evenings in front of the television and can double up as a bedroom, while the separate living room can be used for more formal entertaining.

With three generous bedrooms arranged across the first floor and the master suite appointed on the second floor, the Velvet offers plenty of space and privacy for each member of the family. Additionally, the master and second bedroom both benefit from en suite shower room, ensuring that there won’t be queues for the centrally located family bathroom.

Additional recognition from the judges came for the diverse appeal of Rosewood, which features 20 different housetypes in total to accommodate a number of buyer profiles ranging from first time buyers to growing families to downsizers.

Peter Diffley, Managing Director, Crest Nicholson Eastern, commented: “Industry recognition at the Housebuilder Awards for Rosewood is quite an accolade. With the houses specially designed for this development, we are looking to recreate these across other new developments. The Velvet itself has always been an impressive model, and we are delighted that it has had such an impact on the Housebuilder Awards’ judges.”

Lead architect John Dodson of Broadway Malyan commented: “Rosewood gave us the opportunity to develop an innovative contemporary Essex style, which in turn generated a series of intelligent housetypes specially created for the development.

“We’ve made corner houses a feature across Rosewood, and while the 45 degree angle in the Velvet threw up a number of architectural challenges, such recognition from the Housebuilder Awards demonstrates that we resolved such issues admirably.

“Clerestory windows are a defining characteristic of both the Velvet and properties at Rosewood as a whole, and apart from contributing to an attractive aesthetic, they also submerge the interiors in natural light, heightening feelings of spaciousness.”
