HOW TO: Top tips on designing your home on a budget

Buying a new home is an exciting time, however for many buyers, getting on or moving up the property ladder can also be a costly. Once you have finally got your hands on the keys to your new place, how can savvy buyers design their brand-new home without breaking the bank?

Karen Vincent-Ernst, Sales Director at Vogue Show Homes and the designer of Crest Nicholson’s luxurious Shipston Gardens show home in Shipston on Stour, shares her top tips:

Create DIY bespoke artwork

Artwork is a great way to bring accent colours into a room. Buy a plain canvas and get creative, producing a bespoke and inexpensive piece to display in your home. Try using textured paints to bring the artwork to life, for example concrete paint effects are perfect for creating a modern industrial look.

Seek vintage bargains

There are some brilliant bargains to be found on auction sites such as Ebay and at vintage stalls. With a discerning eye and a little bit of patience you can get furniture for a fraction of the high street price. You can make it your own by changing the handles or giving it some spray paint to refresh the design.

Get creative with re-upholstering

If you are buying second-hand pieces, invest in a good staple gun and try your hand at some upholstering. Look out for your nearest fabric warehouse, where you can find some beautiful fabrics for lower prices. You can then re-upholster an old sofa, chair covers, cushions or lamp shades.

Design a statement headboard for the master bedroom

Wooden pallet boards are very versatile and can even be used to design your own bespoke headboard. Sand down the wood and spray paint your desired accent colour to create a unique, industrial feel.

When it comes to wallpaper, do your research

There are plenty of budget wallpaper companies, so decide what you want and do some online searches for cheaper alternatives. Wallpaper with bold prints, make excellent features for behind the sofa or a headboard and with less required, it can reduce your spending.

Accessorise!

If you are designing your home on a budget and want it to stand the test of time, it is best to opt for a neutral palette. Accessorises such as rugs, lamps and throws can then be used to add in an accent colour which can be updated when trends change, or when you fancy a refresh.
