The Secretary of State for Wales, Rt Hon Cheryl Gillan MP, has today visited Crest Nicholson’s flagship Penarth Heights development as part of her tour of the area’s top regeneration projects.
The Secretary of State for Wales was shown how this 17-acre site is being transformed from its current dilapidated state into a prestigious development of waterside homes.
David Huggett, managing director of Crest Nicholson, and the Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Councillor Gordon Kemp, guided the Secretary of State for Wales around the site. They explained how the development would benefit the town, as well as the wider area, in conjunction with the Penarth Central Renewal Area project.
The collaboration between the Council and Crest Nicholson was highlighted as a key aspect of the success of the scheme so far and the commitment both parties have to regenerating this area for the benefit of the local community.
The scheme will include 377 new houses and apartments, comprising 20 per cent affordable homes and will offer a range of contemporary one, two, three and four bedroom homes which complement the existing Victorian and Edwardian skyline of the town.
Build is scheduled to start in the next couple of weeks, with the first residents being welcomed in Spring 2011 and the development planned to be complete in 2017. With stunning views across Cardiff Bay, as well as being just a short walk from Penarth town centre, these homes are expected to be in high demand.
David Huggett, managing director for Crest Nicholson, explained: “We were delighted to welcome the Secretary of State for Wales to Penarth Heights and to have it recognised as a beacon of excellence in the regeneration of South Wales. We are steadily moving forward with the development and look forward to seeing the new homes and community take shape.”
Secretary of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan said: “I have been hugely impressed with the progress being made by Penarth Heights Development in redeveloping this estate. The development when complete will have 377 new properties, 20 per cent of which will be affordable housing. I will be following the progress with keen interest and would very much like to visit in the future to see how it is coming along.”
Cllr Gordon Kemp, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the Secretary of State to the Vale to mark her first 100 days in office. We are looking forward to seeing Penarth Heights completed; it is an important part of our plans for the town, which include a major renewal programme which is improving existing housing in the area.
“We are also about to commence a similar renewal programme in Barry and we are working with private developers there too, on the regeneration of the town’s waterfront.”
