Becoming a low carbon business
Understanding and responding to the challenges posed by climate change remains a strategic priority for our business. Climate change is brought about by an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), in the atmosphere. The predicted effects of this increase are an increase in average temperatures, rising sea levels, increased precipitation and more frequent extreme weather events.
Under the UK Climate Change Act 2008 a system of legally binding carbon budgets were established to set the trajectory towards the target of reducing UK greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80%. According to Government figures, the built environment currently accounts for 50% of the UK's total CO2 emissions, with residential housing contributing 27%. The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to its Low Carbon Transition Plan and the 2016 Zero Carbon Timeline for domestic dwellings, and has announced its intention to put in place similar requirements for new non-domestic buildings. To support the zero carbon ambition, a number of incentives such as Feed in Tariffs and the Renewable Heat Incentive are being consulted upon.
Crest Nicholson recognises climate change as a key material issue for our business and we are committed to a continuous reduction of our carbon footprint. Despite the serious impact of the downturn in the economy on the industry, in 2009 we reviewed and reaffirmed our Climate Change Policy which clearly sets our approach and specific objectives.
