Analysing our carbon footprint

The Carbon Footprint and emissions data reported in 2008 has allowed us to establish an emissions baseline against which to set targets for emissions reductions and help identify specific areas of focus.

Our 2009 Carbon Footprint

In 2009 the scope of our carbon footprint was expanded to include office water use and some of our site activities (energy and water use).

Assessment Boundary: Operational emissions chart

Fig1. shows our operational carbon emissions boundary. ("Operational" is defined to exclude all site and build related activities).

The carbon emissions captured this year from energy and water use on site amounted to some 2437 tonnes CO2eq, and is reported in more detail in the Sustainable Construction section.

2009 Operational Carbon Footprint (tonnes CO2eq)

Our operational carbon footprint amounted to some 2,548 tonnes CO2eq (FY08: 3,102)

Business travel is the largest operational impact (commuting, employee owned vehicles and business travel) covering some 45% of emissions. This emphasises the importance of greening our car fleet and encouraging our staff to use less carbon intensive modes of transport.
