Climate change and waste

Reduce our carbon footprint
2007 we said 2008 we did In 2009 we will
Produce an Annual Climate Change Review. 2008 Climate Change Review published. Undertake and publish a 2009 review.
Conduct a carbon intensity study to assess the emissions arising from the construction phase.
Begin to understand embodied energy in both raw materials and finished products.
Completed at a typical medium size development. Extend to more sites for a broader data set.
Develop climate change adaptation measures to future-proof our developments. Defined what adaptation means to Crest Nicholson and ran training events. Undertake a risk assessment of the existing land bank and development pipeline.
Reduce emissions from offices and sites – energy, waste and water use, transport
2007 we said 2008 we did In 2009 we will
Improve quality of data for energy and water consumption for offices and sites. 100% meter readings for offices. Established system to monitor site energy and water use. Establish baseline data for all material impacts by year-end.
Reduce carbon emissions from offices by 25% in 2008. 16.5% reduction in office CO2e Launch employee engagement programme to achieve further reductions
From November 2008 set maximum cap on emissions for new company cars at 195g/CO2 (down from 225). Reduced our average to 168g/m, down from 175g/m. From November 2009 set a maximum cap at no more than 15% above industry average, (currently at 165).
Work with contractors and suppliers to encourage the ongoing use of low carbon fuels. Commissioned report on options for the use of low carbon fuels. Redefine target based on outputs of report.
Introduce water saving measures to regional offices. Installed dual flush toilets and flow restrictors in the taps. Launch an employee engagement programme to obtain further reductions.
Improve the energy performance of our build and dwellings
2007 we said 2008 we did In 2009 we will
Understand data from SAP, BREEAM, Eco-Homes and Code compliance, and set targets for new homes. 2008 Code & SAP targets were set. Redefine targets in light of new SAP and Code for Sustainable Homes requirements.
Water: Set a target of 105 lpppd for all units going to Planning in 2008. Achieved. Monitor effect on design and customer reaction.
Conduct Code for Sustainable Homes workshops. Completed for all operational staff and tailored for build teams. Increase knowledge sharing from leading edge developments.
Waste
2007 we said 2008 we did In 2009 we will
Reduce construction waste sent to landfill by 10% by 2009. Worked with WRAP and our waste contractors to source real data on which to base measurements. Continue work to establish accurate baseline data and redefine longer-term targets.
Reduce construction waste sent to landfill by 50% by 2011. Signed up to WRAP Halving waste to landfill commitment.
Engaged with WRAP to develop best practice model for site waste reduction.
Establish an accurate baseline and redefine interim targets. Continue on-site engagement with WRAP.
Develop design brief by May 2009 for a ‘design out’ waste programme to reduce wastage on-site. Began engagement with WRAP. Design brief to be developed in partnership with (WRAP).
Work with key suppliers and sub-contractors to implement packaging take-back schemes and reduce damaged materials delivered. In place with key supplier for kitchen appliances. Continue to review and implement with other key suppliers.
