Growing a safety culture

The health and safety of our employees, visitors, and all site workers is of paramount importance. We are committed to high standards of risk management, focussed training, clear procedures and regular monitoring. We combine this rigorous approach with a focus on engaging everyone in the business to grow our health and safety culture.

This year’s health and safety report is overshadowed by the fatal injury suffered by a roofing contractor when he fell at one of our developments in February 2008. The coroner’s inquest returned a verdict of accidental death, and no prosecution was pursued by the Health and Safety Executive.

We remain determined to continue to grow the safety culture within both Crest Nicholson and our supply chain to ensure that no further fatalities should occur on our sites, and to ensure that all employees, sub-contractors and site visitors return home at the end of the day safe and healthy.

We also aim for an Annual Injury Incidence Rate (AIIR) lower than the construction industry average. We reported 23 incidents to the Health & Safety Executive in 2008, compared with 21 in 2007, which resulted in a rise in the AIIR to 923 from 734, which is regrettably higher than the construction industry average. However, our overall level of all injury incidents fell significantly - from 223 (2007) to 120 – a reduction of 46% while numbers employed, including sub-contractors, declined by only 13%.
