Sustainable construction
While we are delivering much needed new homes we recognise that the construction phase of development can have a significant impact on the surrounding community.
We aim to ensure that any disruption to the local community is minimised, and that our sites are well managed and efficient delivering high quality workmanship in a safe and pleasant environment for site personnel, visitors and the local community.
On this page, we address three aspects of sustainable construction:
- Responsible construction delivered through The Considerate Constructors Scheme
- The 'Pride in the Job' awards
- Responsible timber sourcing
Responsible construction
In July 2008 Crest Nicholson made a commitment that all new operational construction sites would be registered under the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS). CCS is a nationally recognised, accredited system which evaluates three main areas; the environment, the workforce and the general public. Independent professionals monitor performance and sites are scored out of 40, with a score of 24 representing compliance.
Performance
The number of sites registered under CCS has increased to 20 in 2008 (FY07: 4). All our sites surpassed the minimum compliance score of 24. The average score was 32 (see figure 1), above the industry average of 30. Five sites scored above 35, representing an "excellent" performance, and these will be put forward for the National Award.

CCS Scores for Crest Nicholson sites in FY08
All Crest Nicholson sites are adopting the CCS Code of Practice, and sharing best practice from those with the highest scores.
A Record year for the 'Pride in the Job' Awards
2008 was our best year yet in the National House-Building Council's 'Pride in the Job' awards with fourteen of our regional site managers receiving a 'Quality Award'. This is the only national competition to focus on the contribution made by the site manager in producing high quality new homes.
Qualifying out of more than 18,000 contenders across the UK, 14 of our site managers will now join 400 other Quality Award winners competing for the 'Seal of Excellence' Awards in the late autumn.
These awards are a testament to their commitment to delivering excellent standards right across the board. Our site managers play a pivotal role in ensuring delivery and maintaining the quality standards for which Crest Nicholson has become recognised.
