Analysing our carbon footprint

To play our part effectively in reducing carbon dioxide emissions it is essential to understand the key issues and how they relate to our business strategy. In 2008 the Executive Board held a strategic planning and training workshop on climate change including the science behind climate change, and the associated political and regulatory framework. The Sustainability Business Improvement Workgroup held workshops in 2008 to understand the strategic importance and business benefits of climate change issues, to understand the scale and significance of our impacts and to identify and prioritise specific climate change risks and set relevant targets.

The area of climate change involves a complex set of issues and is far reaching both in terms of the breadth and depth of its impacts. We consider our impacts in five key areas: energy, water, waste, materials and transport.

In our last report we committed to undertake a study to begin to understand the full carbon intensity of our operations and in April 2008 we published our first Climate Change Review. We reviewed our operations and defined the scope of our carbon footprint as follows:
