Adapting to a changing climate

Adaptation means putting measures in place to respond to the anticipated risks from the effects of a changing climate. At Crest we are aware we need to consider climate change adaptation as well as mitigation measures. We have reviewed the potential impacts from climate change on developments including:

  • Increased risk of flooding in vulnerable locations
  • Increased exposure to flash flooding in urban locations with extensive hard surfaces
  • Water shortages in areas with less rainfall, affecting occupiers through water constraints and increased costs
  • Reduced soil moisture – increase in ground movements, subsidence
  • Occupiers being more prone to heat stress during more frequent heat waves
  • By 2020, wind speeds up by 1.6%.

To plan for the various future scenarios outlined by the UK Climate Impacts Programme, we are establishing an internal working group on Climate Change Adaptation. This will undertake a risk assessment of the existing land bank and development pipeline which will identify and prioritise the key risks and implications for asset values, build programmes, and staff and contractor health and safety.
